Procession of Los Estudiantes

HOLY WEDNESDAY EARLY MORNING

PROCESSION OF LOS ESTUDIANTES (THE STUDENTS)

Religious brotherhood in charge: Hermandad y Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo del Amor, Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo y Rescatado y María Santísima del Valle.

During this procession, the penitents, or nazarenos as we call them, kneel down in every stop destined for them to perform their penitence (Estación de Penitencia) to honour the suffering of Christ carrying the Holy Cross. What stands out about their way of parading along the streets is the absence of music, as well as the austerity and the seriousness of its penitents.

The sculpture of El Santísimo Cristo del Amor (Holy Father of Love) represents the image of Christ already dead and crucified. Baroque in style, the sculpture consists of a polychrome wood carving in oil on an arboreal cross from the second half of the 18th century. Another sculpture with great artistic significance is María Santísima del Valle Virgin (Our Lady of the Valley). However, one must admire it from San Sabastián Church, as this sculpture is not taken to the streets.
